The government of the Sudan also announced that it aimed to raise the production of gold to 110 tons in 2018, which will make the country the ninth biggest producer in the world and the second biggest in Africa. Behind this new “golden age”, miners work in a harsh environment and exposed to various health risks such as accidents, pneumoconiosis (a lung disease caused by the inhalation of dust) and mercury poisoning.
